There are several things that teenagers can do about the difficult situation of dealing with alcoholic parents. These types difficulties in life are not just isolated to you. In fact, millions of families are effected by parents who drink too much alcohol. So, with that in mind, just know that you are not alone. Many teens are lonely and frustrated just like you because one or both their mom and dad consume too much to drink on a regular basis.

You will find the help and friendship that you need by getting involved with this great group of people who want to help you during this difficult time in your life.
You are not alone in your frustrations with your parents. Teenagers all over the world are in similar situations as you. If you will reach out to get help, you will get the help you need.
When people first start attending support group meetings like Al-a-teen, in the beginning the are very angry and hurt. Oftentimes, there are many tears that we cry as we tell the horrific stories of what is going on our lives. After a while (several meetings) we begin to settle down and the pain of living with alcoholic parents begins to get lessened.
1)Don’t be ashamed to speak to an adult about what is happening in your home. Youth groups, church pastors, school guidance counselors or even a friend’s mom or dad might be a good place to share some of your frustrations. Perhaps you have an aunt or uncle who you can talk to about what is going on in your house. Try not to keep it all to yourself. This is not something that only you are dealing with. If you think about how much beer there is on the shelves of the grocery store, you will begin to realize that there are a lot of people who are drinking alcohol.
2)Find a support group meeting for teenagers who have alcoholic parents. As I previously said , Al-ateen is a great place where you will find people who understand what you are going through. It is in fellowships like these that you will find the hope and friendship that you need. You will also discover that you are loved in a very special way.

The truth is that living with alcoholic parents can sometimes be too much for use. We get lonely and frustrated because we do not like the way we are being treated. All we want is to just be loved and accepted by them. Instead we experience loads of embarrassment, anger, shame and guilt associated with alcoholism.
You can do something about your situation today. You cannot make your alcoholic parents stop drinking. What you can do is find help for yourself. Consider doing what I’ve suggested, call Al-anon/Al-a-teen and get the help that you need today. I promise there will be someone who really cares about your situation on the other end of the phone. Just make the call, they do not know you and you do not know them. You have nothing to be embarrassed about because they too have lived or are living with the problem of alcoholism.
